Fast train between Randstad to northern Netherlands

De Lelylijn is the proposed rail connection from Randstad to Groningen, running through Flevoland and Friesland. A fast train is to run on it, stopping only in a few larger towns along the way.

De Lelylijn brings the Randstad and the North closer together

With a shorter travel time, the North becomes more accessible and the pressure on the existing rail connection between Zwolle and Groningen is relieved. Studying, working and visiting other people in another place will become much easier as a result. Due to the fast connection, companies in the Northern Netherlands will become more accessible. Moreover, the Lelylijn is a sustainable alternative to the car.

Preliminary design De Lelylijn

Exactly how the Lelylijn should run has not yet been decided. The plans for the Lelylijn have yet to be further elaborated and a final decision for the construction of the Lelylijn has yet to be made. The cabinet has set aside 3 billion euros to build the Lelylijn with co-financing from the region and European funds. A preliminary design for the Lelylijn will be established in the fall of 2024. Residents, businesses and local governments will be well involved in the preparations Also, the corresponding financing must be found by then.

De Lelylijn and Delta Plan for the Northern Netherlands.

In 2021, the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Fryslân and Flevoland drew up a plan to give a socioeconomic boost to the Northern Netherlands and Flevoland and to contribute to the housing issue: ‘The building blocks for the Delta Plan’. Improving the public transport accessibility of the Northern Netherlands is central to this.

The building blocks of the Delta Plan for the Northern Netherlands in brief:

• De Lelylijn: a new, fast train connection between Lelystad, Groningen and Leeuwarden.
• Improving existing track: addressing bottlenecks on existing track to reduce travel time and improve reliability.
• The Lower Saxony Line: a new rail link between Groningen and Enschede, connecting to the German rail network.
