Broad prosperity survey: residents in Northern Netherlands majority positive about De Lelylijn
The majority of residents of the northern provinces are positive about the construction of the Lelylijn.
However, the advantages and disadvantages they see differ per target group and region.
This is evident from research conducted by the Groningen Social Planning Office, the Fryslân Planning Office and the Drenthe Trend Agency, which was commissioned by the Lelylijn project organization.
Quantitative and qualitative research
One of the studies conducted by the Lelylijn project organization focuses on broad prosperity.
Broad prosperity is about the quality of life, not only now, but also in the future and other places.
The De Lelylijn project organization is looking at the economic benefits of the Lelylijn, such as better connections and access to work, as well as the broader impact of the rail link on residents’ daily lives.
This is done both quantitatively, using figures and statistics, and qualitatively, through interviews and workshops with residents.
This news release announces the results of the qualitative survey.
The results of the quantitative part will follow after the summer.
Pros and Cons of the Lelylijn
With input from residents, a qualitative study was conducted on the pros and cons of theLelylijn.
The results do show differences by target group.
People from Leeuwarden and the surrounding area are more conservative.
For them, the prevailing question is: what does the line mean for the community and nature?
In contrast, people from Drachten and surrounding areas and Emmeloord and surrounding areas predominantly expect great benefits, because they will have a centrally located station.
Groningers are also very positive about the Lelylijn, as it will provide a better connection to the rest of the Netherlands.
In addition, more specialized jobs are expected to become available to Groningers due to better accessibility.
Young adults positive, over-65s more negative
The study distinguished not only between different areas, but also between age groups.
Young adults (schoolchildren and students) see more positive effects for work, housing and accessibility.
For people over 65, expected negative effects of construction weigh somewhat more heavily.
The effects on nature, identity and individuality are more important for this group.
Scenario workshops
The research was conducted among 141 residents of the Northern Netherlands in a series of scenario workshops.
This working form is a qualitative method to identify the expected positive and negative effects of the Lelylijn on Brede Welvaart.
The workshops were held in Friesland (Leeuwarden and environs, Drachten and environs), Groningen (Groningen city and environs, Leek/Tolbert region) and Flevoland (Emmeloord and environs).
The various participants fall into the target groups of young people, students, people of working age and people of retirement age.
Report
The results were incorporated into the report Broad Welfare Aspects of a Possible Lelylijn.
The report provides insight into the results for each focus group and also shows the advantages and disadvantages mentioned by the participants.
