Youth on Lelylijn: Better accessible North and less crowded trains

Commissioned by the project organization Lelylijn, the Student Advisory Committee(SAC) Groningen researched the opinions and interests of young people up to 25 years of age about the Lelylijn. The research shows that young people consider the improved accessibility of the Northern Netherlands, less congestion on the trains and the solving of bottlenecks on the railroad important. There will be a youth debate in the Forum in Groningen on Monday, May 27, based in part on these survey results. Young people can still register for May 27

The survey builds on the results of the 2023 online consultation in which 11,000 residents gave their opinions on Lelylijn. SAC Groningen conducted a data analysis to compare young people’s opinions with those of the rest of the population. The goal was to understand what themes and concerns at Lelylijn are specifically important to young people, a key category of users.

The SAC report , with both quantitative and qualitative analyses, also shows what young people are concerned about. For example, the potential increase in traffic congestion due to the Lelylijn. While there are concerns related to nature, young people are relatively less concerned about disturbing the landscape. Young people generally see more benefits in the Lelylijn than older people.

Based on the findings, the SAC recommends organizing meetings where young people can actively participate and share their ideas. These sessions can help gain more insights into the specific needs and preferences of young people.
